Dragonfly & Butterflies

A few shots taken in the garden yesterday, with one or two nice surprises (at least for me) thrown in.

I think this is a Southern Hawker. I have never seen one before let alone one in the garden.

Small Tortoiseshell

The only reason I have put this shot in is because out of focus butterfly next to the Peacock butterfly
a White-letter Hairstreak
The two shots below are also out of focus but I think they show again a White-letter Hairstreak, a butterfly I only saw for the first time a few weeks ago and now to see one in the garden is to me amazing (even though they are out of focus).

  1. What a cracking selection Ron, don't know much about butterflies but I think to get a White-letter Hairstreak is a major garden tick :-) And a posing Southern Hawker female same day amazing. I get a number of dragonflies flying through each summer but never yet seen one settle to photograph. Great when the wildlife comes to you though, you must have green-fingers as well as a keen eye ;-)

  2. Thanks Alan I don't know about green fingers (you haven't seen the garden) but I got lucky. I'm pleased I got the ID right on the Southern Hawker but I had know idea it was a female.
