Waxwings

 28.11.23 Right place right time. On the way to Tesco in Annfield Plain to do some shopping on the 26th I noticed that some of the berries had been stripped from the top of a small tree in a garden. I had seen a post on X about Waxwings in the area so a couple of days later I thought I would go and have a look just in case. I was just driving past the tree when a couple of Waxwing flew off it. I parked up and waited for the Waxwings to come back. They did and once again (as you can see) I took far too many pictures.

There was also a single Fieldfare in the tree and it wasn’t happy about the Waxwings pinching its berries.

 17.11.23 and a short drive to Consett for the Waxwings. They were very flighty at first and stayed near the top of the tall trees however they grew in confidence (and were probably hungry) and started to come down for the berries.

 There are hundreds of Waxwing in the country at the moment and I was lucky enough to catch up with some at Waldridge a couple of days ago. While I was there in the morning there was only one bird and it was quite approachable. A couple of dog walkers walked underneath the tree it was in and there was even a family playing with a ball and the Waxwing wasn’t bothered it just sat there eating berries. It eventually flew off so I left. However, I went back in the afternoon and after a short wait three Waxwing turned up. These three were very flighty so flighty that a Goldfinch spooked them and they were off and did not return.

There was also a couple of Redwing making the most of all the berries.

I spotted a flock of Thrushes flying over and I thought they had landed in the top of a tree so I went to have a look. I didn’t fine the Thrushes but I spooked this Buzzard which I hadn’t seen sitting in a tree.

This Sparrowhawk was getting mobbed by some Crows.
