Out walking

I have been out for a couple of short local walks recently, here are some images of what I saw.

Female Roe Deer.

Roe Buck.

It didn’t hang around once it got wind of me.

Nuthatch looking for insects.

Sparrowhawk landing in a bush.

A distant Willow Tit taking the seeds from a pine cone.

Roosting

Only the second time out with the camera in weeks and both have been local. One of my neighbours put me onto a Red Kite which he had seen roosting while out walking with his dog. Yesterday I went looking for it and found two in the same tree. Today I went for a walk and decided to take the camera just in case and I’m pleased I did as I came across this Long-eared Owl enjoying the afternoon sun.

Red Kite watching me.

This one was the only one I managed to get an image of as the other flew off.

650 up

My first visit to Bowes Valley Nature Reserve (Kibblesworth Brick Ponds) this year was on the 4th of June so I am way behind with my Blog and I know I say it all the time but I will have to stop taking so many pictures.

Four-spotted Chaser

Another posing quite nicely

Four-spotted Chaser photobombed by a Damselfly.

Another with a Large Red Damselfly.

A one in flight

And a mating pair in flight and I nearly got a sharp image of them

I saw both male and female Broad-bodied Chaser but only managed a shot of the male

Blue-tailed Damselfly

Mating pair of Blue-tailed Damselflies? The male seems to have a beetle trapped between its legs

Another mating pair

This time a pair of Azure Damselflies

My first Large Skipper of the year

And my first Small Heath of the year

Nettle Weevil

On the way back to the car, I saw this juvenile Great-spotted Woodpecker poking its head out of its nest hole.

Later the same day I had a walk around Burdon Moor. I was only there a short time and while I was there this Roe Deer was the only thing worth taking a picture of

A first and a last…

…a first as in it is the first time ever I have seen a Brimstone Butterfly in the North East. I have seen them in other parts of the country but never here, this morning that changed. The last comes in the form of, unfortunately, the demise of a Bullfinch that I came across the other day.

Brimstone Butterfly. It might be a bit strange on this Blog but it’s my first in the North East.

Male Bullfinch

A pair of Bullfinch. The male is carrying what looks like nesting material.

Female Bullfinch

The male again with nesting material.

Two males, one looking aggressive.

I don’t know if it had anything to do with the aggressive bird in the above pictures but not long after I came across this dead Bullfinch. I thought to myself that would make a canny meal for something.

I was proved right because not long after I saw this Stoat carrying the Bullfinch off.
